Retirement Announcement

Effective January 1, 2012
Creative Heartworks will no longer be in operation.

I am excited to announce that I recently made the decision to retire at the end of this year, and we will no longer be in business. It was a difficult decision, but one I feel in my heart is right for me at this time. I want to reclaim our house, work on my own art, play golf and spend as much time with my granddaughter in Alabama as possible.

I have felt truly blessed to have had the opportunity to work with so many wonderful people and talented artists during the last few years, and we have truly appreciated your business, your friendship and your support.

It has been in my awareness that I have not updated the blog since Madeline's death this past March. Her death had a deep impact, and I have been coming to terms with that. Part of my process was to publish a book with my photos and an original poem I wrote. This book was dedicated to Madeline. Perhaps I am now ready to get back to the here and now.

William Thompson Solo Show in New York

New York, March 2011 - PaulaBarr chelsea, is delighted to host William Thompson's first solo show in New York City. The artist will be present at the opening, on Thursday, March 24th, from 6 pm to 8 pm.

The artist, William Thompson said: "No Risk, No Reward! I have been painting and drawing for over two decades and have had numerous art shows in and around my hometown of Portland, OR. Now after many years, I have been given a generous opportunity to show my artwork in New York City. What a wonderful opportunity! The risk is great, but the rewards of my efforts will be much greater. Now knowing that my artwork has come this far, it will now go much farther.

William Thompson is a self-taught artist. William has had a solo show in Portland and was published in a Featured Editorial "A Soldier's Vision" - Oregonian, Portland. In 2008 he was a featured artist in Creative Heartworks, On-Line Gallery in Oregon. William has been a member of the US Army and Oregon Army National Guard for over twenty years. His experiences in the military have greatly affected his outlook on life and his art, which has continued to evolve since his return from Iraq in 2005. William presents "A Soldier's Vision", a painting of himself painting a picture of where he would rather be while in combat. Although there is a lot going on in the piece, he hopes that those who see the painting will draw something from the examples of life from a soldier's perspective, and that they can see the human sacrifice of war by the soldiers on both sides and by the innocent civilians caught in the cross-fire.

Madeline Meza Janovec, owner of Janovec Studio/Gallery, passed away Friday, March 4th, three months after being diagnosed with Stage IV Burkitt's Lymphoma. She was a printmaker, jewelry maker, and painter; and she taught art at Clark College and Portland Community College for more than 20 years. She was my dear friend and colleague, and she will be deeply missed.

“FOCUS ON WOMEN”, an ART EXHIBIT AND BENEFIT FOR MADELINE MEZA JANOVEC, will be presented by The Oregon Women’s Caucus for Art in celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day. This exhibit will showcase the work of OWCA artists and invited guests in a variety of mediums, including paintings, photographs, and prints. It will also celebrate the contributions of the OWCA founder and Janovec Gallery owner, Madeline Meza Janovec, who is undergoing treatment for cancer. To benefit Janovec, a percentage of all sales will be donated to help defray the costs of her medical treatment. Janovec's work will also be available for sale, and one of her hand-crafted pieces of jewelry will be raffled.

The Oregon Women’s Caucus for Art, a chapter of the national caucus, which was formed in 1972 to support women artists, was formed in 1987 mainly through the efforts of Madeline Janovec who has been the guiding force of the chapter for almost 25 years. Bev Jozwiak at the Aurora Gallery in Vancouver

Artist Bev Jozwiak will be featured at the Aurora Gallery for the month of October. Opening and reception will be held October 1st, 6:00-9:00 pm with live music and refreshments.

Bev's new work at Aurora Gallery will feature both watercolor and acrylic paintings. This one woman exhibit is a sure to please event for all ages. The current work includes the humorous crow series, beach walkers, ballet dancers, wine and women, and musicians. This show is significant for Vancouver, Bev's hometown, where she is very well collected by local art lovers. She is known for her loose but controlled painting style and popular image content.

Our clients, Ty and Tamara Mautner, participated in the Pacific Commercial Fisherman’s Festival in Astoria this past weekend. Below is information about the couple, their art form, Gyotaku (fish prints), and photos of their booth.

Ty and Tamara live and make art in Rockaway Beach, Oregon. Raised on the coast, they have traveled, worked, played, cared for, and harvested food from the ocean. They have always felt a deep bond to the sea and all life within it.

Their work incorporates the Japanese art technique of Gyotaku, otherwise known as “fish printing.” Gyotaku started as a way for fishermen to accurately record their catches, and has since developed into a form of fine art. Part of what draws Ty and Tamara to this style is the originality of each print. Each unique piece is a record of a particular fish caught at a specific time and place. They can then use the raw print to create their own unique and beautiful representation of life under the surface.

Legacy Good Sam Art Fair

Frank Springer, a 98 Year old glass artist, will be the featured artist at an art fair being held at the Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center on August 26th. You can meet Frank and view his work between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM in the Stenzel Healing Garden.

Frank is a retired Portland Police Officer that still lives alone, still drives and continues to enjoy his weekly poker nights with friends and family. He began working in stained glass 40+ years ago, and his home of many years features his stained glass in windows and doors. When working with stained glass became too difficult due to age, he switched to making beautiful fused glass platters, vases and bowls, and he spends as much time as possible in his basement creating pieces with unique pattern and color designs.

When asked why he enjoys working with glass so much, Frank said, “I really love bright colors and the challenge of producing intricate designs. Plus, working with glass allows me to make a variety of items in very different ways. I’m not limited to making just one thing and I don’t get bored”.

Frank’s glasswork has been featured in several art galleries and gift shops in the Portland metro area, and can currently be found at the Geezer Gallery in Multnomah Village.

International Women Artists' Exhibition 2010

Her Presence in Colours IX, an International Women Artists' Exhibition, is part of a week long conference surrounding women artists from around the world. The Oregon Women's Caucus for Art (OWCA), a chapter of the National Women's Caucus for Art, welcomes to Portland international visitors for the 9th biannual conference of the International Women's Art Council (INWAC) based in Panang, Malaysia. This is the first such conference held in the United States and Portland will be opening its doors to welcome the artists during the first week in August. The public is invited to the weeklong series of free events, offering an opportunity to interact with the artists and to help promote world peace and harmony through communication and meaningful interaction.

In 2008, OWCA members Madeline Janovec and Una Kim were asked in Beijing at the 8th INWAC conference, where they were participants, to host the 9th conference in Portland. OWCA agreed to host this important event. Previous conferences have been held in Australia, England, Malaysia, China, Thailand, Korea. The conference is the vision of Dr. Yuen Chee Ling, Director of the Conservancy of Fine Art of Malaysia and founder/president of the International Council of Women's Art. Her Presence in Colours reflects the cohesive spirit of women artists and their inner passion for life and art, their concern and awareness, their emotions and aspirations.

Acclaimed watercolorist, Bev Jozwiak brings a second feature show to Cole Gallery in Edmonds on May 20, 2010 for the Gallery’s May Feature spot. Jozwiak presents whimsical figurative and animal paintings with rich color and loose splashy lines in this new show. “It’s a direction I’ve been going in for a while,” Jozwiak stated in a recent interview, “painterly and loose.”

Bev Jozwiak captures a slice of life in this recent body of work. Each emotion of the subject matter leaps right off the hot pressed paper and into your soul. “This show is a delightful repast for the eyes,” Denise Cole, gallery owner said. Often spectators are unsure just how she achieves such rich color with water colors. “I don’t use much water!” Jozwiak exclaimed. Every brilliant color goes directly on the paper for an effect that is unique unto her.

Bev Jozwiak currently resides in Vancouver, WA, where she grew up. She has two daughters, often seen throughout her work, and a grandson.

In The Oregonian's Editorial Section May 7th edition, there is an article written by Mike Francis about artist William Thompson, one of our clients. Featured in the article is William's painting, A Soldier's Vision.

Oregonian Article: Confronting the Memories

William's personal statement about this painting:

This painting is inspired by my friend, Brian Currier, who asked me upon my return from Iraq if I could paint a picture of my thoughts on where I would rather be while I was in combat. Of course, the painting depicts a fictional situation of me painting a picture of where I would rather have been. One of the Iraqi soldiers shown standing guard is immortalized in this piece. I had worked closely with him for five months prior to his death. These are realistic examples of what I experienced in combat and show the distractions of the day to day combat life, while also showing the silver lining in a very dark cloud, i.e. the opposites of war and peace, friends and enemies, and life and death. Although there is a lot going on in "A Soldier's Vision," I am hoping that those who see the painting will draw something from the examples of life for the solider and see that it is a lot more complicated than just right or wrong. It is about the individual soldier's experiences in combat. I know that some people will see my painting and come to their own conclusions about what it means to them. I am hoping that they can see the human sacrifice of war both by the solider and by the innocent caught in the crossfire.

William Thompson is having an open-studio showing for the first time this weekend, in conjunction with another artist. It will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 2126 S.W. Arnold St. in Portland. The public is welcome.

Bobby Fouther’s Career in the Northwest spans over forty-five years of artistic expression. Of primary focus is his lifelong goal of bringing communities together through the arts. Bobby Fouther likes to tell us “I am inspired by everything from birth to death and have been trained by many mentors to see the beauty in all things. My current focus has been the painting and photography of flowers, torsos and abstract work with colors. It is with the utmost importance that we all learn the languages of non-verbal communication to tell our stories”.

This current “Spirit of Portland Award” winner for Independent Spirit continues to teach and perform for students at his King School Performing Arts Project.

At the beginning of each year, Creative Heartworks evaluates the previous year by reviewing our policies, procedures and prices to determine what has worked well and what changes need to be made. We usually learn a lot during the year about work flow, and we always discover new products or methods that will enable us to provide better service and quality of product.

Our price changes are always made based on this review. Changes this year can be found on our new price list published on our website. If you are a current client, you will notice we have changed how we price prints on canvas. Before we had separate fees for printing and varnishing. Our new price of 14 cents per square inch combines the fees for printing and varnishing - making it easier to determine the price of a print on canvas. Click here to review our new price list.

On October 11th, more than 10,000 people will come together in Pioneer Courthouse Square with the goal of raising $325,000 for services provided by Cascade AIDS Project to prevent new HIV infections, care for people affected and infected by HIV/AIDS, educate communities to eliminate stigma and shame and advocate for immediate action in combating the pandemic. Lesley is asking for your support as she walks the 5k (3.1 mi) route to raise much needed funds for HIV and AIDS prevention, services and advocacy in Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Five charities will benefit October 1st as five local artists from Thursday Art Gallery have each donated a selected piece to be sold at the First Thursday show with all proceeds going toward their favorite charities. LeslieAnn Butler, an award-winning Portland artist, has selected Down from the Tree, a 36x18 acrylic painting (pictured), to go on sale with all money raised going to the Oregon Humane Society.
